How To Choose Which Back To School Product Is Right For Your Student

You have done your homework and know everything there is to know about every computer on the market. You know how much each one costs and what it can do but what you don’t know is which one is right for your son or daughter heading off to school next month.
As parents and usually the ones paying for the computer, you will want one that is functional, capable of performing all the tasks needed for study and costs the least. As a student, they want everything available with super loud bells and whistles, regardless of the price. Somewhere in the middle is the computer that will do everything parents want it to do while also supplying some temporary diversions for the student.
In the not-so-distant past there were not as many choices as there are today with laptop and tablet computers joining the foray into college campus computer users. Students no longer want to feel tethered to their dorm rooms by a keyboard and a cable connected to the school’s internet network. Many schools are still offering the wired network in the dorm rooms while adding Wi-Fi capabilities at spots throughout the campus.
Students may complain of a call schedule that doesn’t offer them time to return to their dorm for research or working on projects before heading to their next class, while a laptop with wireless networking capabilities will allow them to work on their projects while away from their room.
Today’s portable computers offer many of the same features that just a few short years ago were only available on desktop models. High speed wireless internet access, CD drives and recorders along with DVD players and printing capabilities. Even with some of the more graphic intensive programs for engineering and creative arts classes, laptops are being built with the memory capability to make them useful for many applications.
Security at the school at which the student attends is another consideration. Stolen property claims at many universities include thefts from dorm rooms as well as from vehicles, which offer more ammunition to the student aiming at a laptop that they can carry with them at all times.
However, if your student has plenty of time to work in their room, a desktop may be a better option as they don’t have to worry about making sure a portable’s battery is kept charged and typically, they can remain connected to the school’s intranet for class work, research and communication. Downloading music on their computer also requires a lot of memory, usually larger on a desktop computer.
They can also add peripherals to their unit and have their printer instead of relying on the school’s network printers, especially during busy times when every student on campus is printing their reports.
