How To Decide Which Printer Would Compliment Your Back To School Needs

The hard part is done and you have made the plunge for a new computer, knowing it will everything you need it to do. Next comes the process of choosing a printer that will meet your back to school needs. Most students will not have the financial resources, or the physical space to house a commercial quality printer and most just something that spits out quality printed materials to turn in as their homework.
Finding the right printer for your school work is just as important as having the right computer. In most instances, a simple inexpensive color desk-jet printer will perform well and the cost of the cartridges is not so high as to render them useless once the ink runs dry. Many companies also offer two grades of cartridges containing different amounts of ink, depending on the user’s needs.
If speed is of the essence and space is available in the dorm or apartment room, a laser printer may be an option. For less than $200 a single color printer can spit out pages in a matter of seconds, often in less than half the time as a traditional printer. Cartridges while able to print 2,500 copies or more depending on the image being printed, are considerably more expensive.
For those using laptop computers, portable printers are available that draw their power from the USB port to which the printer is connected. They fold up small enough to fit into the laptop’s carrying case and can print, usually, in one color only. However, when working in the great outdoors or at a campus hot spot, being able to print a few documents can be an advantage.
Others may need a printer that can do it all such as a printer, scanner and copier combination, all housed in one space-saving unit. Most of the flatbed scanners are capable of 600 dots per inch copies and scanning and up to 1200 dpi is not uncommon. With an optical character reader they can be used to scan printed documents into a work processing program, saving the tine of retyping documents and are usually accurate, depending on the quality of the original copy.
Of course, most people in college will also have their digital camera with them, for homework, naturally, but may not have to time to take their memory cards to the store for printing. Many home printers are capable of printing decent prints in color, and some printers have the option of plugging in the memory card, choosing the pictures to print and watching them come out without going through the computer software first.
Using photo quality ink in a desk-jet printer can produce near commercial quality at a fraction of the per-print price of commercial processing. However, by considering the type of classes you will be taking and the need for printed materials will help decide which printer will be needed.
